There at 47 San Diego Fire Stations in 7 Battalions, located throughout the city, covering over 330 sq mi (850 km2), whose mission is to serve the San Diego community by providing the highest level of emergency/rescue services, hazard prevention and safety education ensuring the protection of life, property and the environment. For medical transportation, the department contracts with San Diego Medical Services, or SDMS. 46 SDMS units as well as personnel are housed throughout the city’s fire stations. SDFD Fire Station 44 is home to two Hazmat response units responsible for the assessment all such incidents throughout San Diego County. The department also operates the city’s two fire helicopters, known as Copter 1 and Copter 2.
